Cosmic rays above the ankle from Z-bursts
نویسنده
چکیده
Neutrinos from far away sources annihilating at the Z resonance on relic neutrinos may give origin to the ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. Here we present predictions of this mechanism with relic neutrinos lighter than 1 eV, which do not gravitationally cluster. We show that not only the super GZK events, but the “ankle” and all events above it can be accounted for. Most primaries above the ankle are predicted to be nucleons up to 10 eV and photons at higher energies. We also find an accumulation at the GZK cutoff energy, a hint of which can be seen in the data.

Can Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays Come from Gamma-Ray Bursts? II: Cosmic Rays Below the Ankle and Galactic GRB
The maximum cosmic ray energy achievable by acceleration by a relativistic blast wave is derived. It is shown that forward shocks from long GRB in the interstellar medium are powerful enough to produce the Galactic cosmic-ray component just below the ankle at 4 × 10eV, as per an earlier suggestion (Levinson & Eichler 1993). It is further argued that, were extragalactic long GRBs responsible for...

Neutrinos from far-away sources annihilating at the Z resonance on relic neutrinos may give origin to the extreme-energy cosmic rays (EECR). If “Z-bursts” are responsible for the EECR events, then we show that the non-observation of cosmic ray events at energies above 2 ×1020 eV by the AGASA Collaboration implies a lower bound ∼ 0.3 eV on the relic neutrino mass. Since this mass exceeds the mas...
متن کاملGamma Ray Bursts Cannot Produce the Observed Cosmic Rays
Using recent results indicating that the redshift distribution of γ-ray bursts most likely follows the redshift evolution of the star formation rate, I show that the energy input from these bursts at low redshifts is insufficient to account for the observed flux of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays with energies above 10 20 eV.
متن کاملThe Origin of Cosmic Rays at All Energies
There is mounting evidence from observations of long duration gamma ray bursts (GRBs), supernova remnants (SNR) and the supernova (SN) explosion 1987A, that SN explosions eject highly relativistic bipolar jets of plasmoids (cannonballs) of ordinary matter. The highly relativistic plasmoids sweep up the ambient matter in front of them, accelerate it to cosmic ray (CR) energies and disperse it al...
